Mater Dei’s Warner Commits to Georgetown

Mater Dei’s Lauren Warner has committed to play volleyball at Georgetown next season, Hoya Coach Jolene Nagle announced.

Warner, a 5-foot-11, outside hitter, earned four varsity letters while playing for the Monarchs, earning all-league honors in 1996 and ’97.

BASEBALL

* Michael Natale, who played at Santa Ana College, was taken in the 28th round of the major league baseball draft. Natale, who graduated from Whittier La Serna High, has signed to attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall. He was the 840th player selected in the two-day draft.

SOCCER

* Dustin Crane, a four-year starter as forward and midfielder for Mission Viejo High, has signed to play soccer at Tulsa, his father, Thomas Heenan, said Friday.

Crane, also a three-year starter on the Diablos’ football team, played club soccer with the Mission Viejo Padeadores for four years.

ACADEMICS

* UCLA women’s tennis player Brandi Freudenberg, a former Times Orange County player of the year, was one of 300 student-athlete representatives who participated in the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., which concluded Friday.

Former Edison High standout Kerry O’Bric (women’s track and field, Baylor), Jamie Blair (women’s cross-country, UC Irvine), Kimberly Gallo (women’s soccer, Cal State Fullerton) and Neil Mason (men’s volleyball, Long Beach State) also attended.

TENNIS

* The “Pie in the Sky” mixed doubles tennis championships will be held June 12-13, at the Sunny Hills Racquet Club in Fullerton.

Sponsored by Polly’s Pies and St. Jude Hospital, the event will raise funds for the Virginia K. Crosson Cancer Center in Fullerton. Last year’s event raised $10,000, with over 86 teams competing.

There will be cash prizes for finalists in every division, with the winners in the open division taking home $3,000.

The entry fee is $45 per player and includes dinner and wine tasting, entertainment, dancing, sponsor gifts and a pass to Saturday night’s exhibition between USC and UCLA tennis programs in a mixed-doubles format.
