Rite Aid Ordered to Warn Customers of Purchasing Expired Products
A judge on Thursday ordered Rite Aid Corp. to inform California customers that they may have purchased expired products, including condoms and baby formula.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Harry Needham issued a temporary restraining order after district attorneys from three counties and one city filed a consumer protection lawsuit this week.
The prosecutors said they inspected Rite Aid stores across the state and found that expired condoms, pregnancy tests, infant formula and children’s medication were being sold.
Rite Aid has said it would increase efforts to educate staff about inventory procedure. The Pennsylvania-based company also said it would take products off the shelf 60 days before their expiration dates instead of 30 days, Rite Aid’s previous policy.
“The action sought today was really unnecessary because Rite Aid has been taking actions to solve this problem,” the company said in a statement.
The suit was brought by Santa Barbara, Merced and Alameda counties, along with the city of San Diego.
