Michael Johnson Didn’t Completely Disappear

So “the last time” J.A. Adande watched Michael Johnson, “he was pulling up lame in that match race against Donovan Bailey in 1997” [June 7]. Of course, those of us who actually follow track and field saw M.J. win the 400-meter world championship later that summer in Athens, then saw him ranked No. 1 in the world in 1998, and now see him favored to win again at the World Championships in Spain in August.

And while Adande was busy snickering at the 3,184 who showed up for the new TFA Pro Championships, he might at least have mentioned that his own paper reported the day before that 8,455 showed up for the NCAA championships in Boise, Idaho, and 16,175 showed up for the California high school championships in Sacramento.

While track nuts like me are grateful for the rare coverage, perhaps Mr. Adande might do a little research on track and field before the next time he writes about track and field.
