Bussey Finishes Second in 46.79

Blaine Bussey of Taft High clocked 46.79 seconds to finish second in the 400 meters at the Foot Locker national outdoor track and field championships Saturday at North Carolina State University.

Sanjay Ayre of the Bronx clocked a nation-leading 46.25 to win the event.

* Matt Swaney of Ventura High, who finished fourth in the Division II race of the 3,200 meters in the Southern Section championships last month, has committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

MISCELLANY

* Rafer Johnson, 1960 Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon, will be the featured speaker at “Catch the Spirit of Giving,” an annual luncheon to be held at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Foundation at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Johnson, a Sherman Oaks resident, was one of the founders of California Special Olympics, which began in 1969.

Darlene and Ken Fanning of Glendale will be recognized at the luncheon for their work with the foundation’s Oak Society, a fund-raising branch of the medical center.
