The city faces the greatest risk in Orange County of water contamination from a gas additive called methyl tertiary-butyl ether, Public Works Director Robert Beardsley said, yet government agencies responsible for supervising the cleanup effort are dragging their feet. That’s what prompted him to ask the City Council recently to pass a resolution demanding that immediate action be taken to eliminate the suspected carcinogen, which leaks from underground storage tanks and threatens water supplies. The council passed the resolution.

“There should be a higher level of concern for the problem,” Beardsley said.
