Winchell’s Donut House chain is launching a new campaign Thursday guaranteeing customers warm, fresh doughnuts each morning. If the outlets don’t deliver, the purchase will be free.

The Warm ‘N’ Fresh program, to be rolled out at all of Winchell’s 110 locations in Southern California, requires that doughnuts sold from 6 to 9 a.m. each day be no more than three hours old. This means that bakers will be making smaller batches of doughnuts and other products. Red flashing lights will signal when the batch has been on display beyond the time limit.

Doughnuts--Under Winchell’s Donut’s new “Warm ‘N’ Fresh” program, a flashing red light on the display case means that a fresh batch of doughnuts is coming out of the oven. Doughnuts are replaced every 15 to 20 minutes between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. each day. The program was described incorrectly in a Times story June 23.

Tom Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the Santa Ana-based chain, said the concept has been tested for four months at seven Winchell’s locations, resulting in sales increases of nearly 10% at each store.
