Los Padres Fire Expected to Be Extinguished Today

A fire that blackened up to 700 acres in the Los Padres National Forest was 85% contained Wednesday night and was expected to be completely doused by today, federal fire officials said.

The fire, which has cost $350,000 to fight so far, may end up costing about $600,000, officials said.

More than 600 firefighters from eight federal, state and local departments were tackling the blaze, dubbed the Kings Fire for the campground where it began. The blaze broke out Tuesday afternoon on the western border of the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area.

The area is in northeastern Ventura County about four miles south of Frazier Park and nine miles west of the Golden State Freeway.

Officials were still investigating the cause.

Meanwhile, two brush fires that broke out Tuesday were determined to have been intentionally set and remain under investigation, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The Tujunga fire charred less than 4 acres near the eastbound Foothill Freeway. More than 100 Los Angeles and Glendale firefighters extinguished the blaze within an hour.

Just east of the Hollywood Bowl, 10 acres burned before being extinguished by more than 160 Los Angeles firefighters and five Los Angeles County probation camp crews.
