Man, 21, Shot in Robbery Attempt
A 21-year-old man shot in the head while fleeing an attempted robbery was in fair condition Thursday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, officials said.
Edgar I. Zarate of Placentia was awake and his vital signs strong, said hospital spokesperson Michelle Glassmeyer.
Police were called to the 1600 block of South Jeffrey Drive in Anaheim at 3:45 a.m. Thursday, where they found Zarate sitting on a curb, blood trickling from his head, Anaheim Sgt. Joe Vargas said.
Authorities say Zarate had just dropped off a friend when he was accosted by a group of men who demanded money and jewelry. The victim tried to speed away when one of the men fired, striking Zarate. The victim lost control of his car and slammed into a tree.
The attackers remained at large. Witnesses are asked to call the Anaheim police at (714) 765-1967.
