California Faces Texas in Shrine Game

California high school football all-stars will try to extend their winning streak to five games when they take on their counterparts from Texas in the 48th annual Shrine game today at Cerritos College.

Kickoff is at 5 p.m. Proceeds from the game benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children in Los Angeles.

The 36-player California team features 24 players from the Southland, including Long Beach Poly’s Chris Lewis, a Stanford-bound quarterback who received the Times’ Glenn Davis Award, which is presented annually to the top prep football player in Southern California.

The California roster includes nine players who will attend UCLA and six bound for USC.

The UCLA signees are: Anaheim Esperanza kicker Nathan Fiske; Fresno Edison defensive back Ricky Manning; Temecula Valley defensive back Ryan Wikert; Monrovia running back Akil Harris; San Jose Oak Grove linebacker Marcus Reese; Corona offensive lineman Shane Lehmann; Bakersfield Ridgeview defensive lineman Rodney Leisle; Westlake tight end Mike Seidman and Newhall Hart receiver Jerry Owens.

The USC signees are: Los Alamitos defensive lineman Bernard Riley; Oakland Skyline linebacker Omar Nazel; Anaheim Esperanza offensive lineman Nate Steinbacher; Santa Ana Mater Dei offensive lineman Lenny Vandermade; Long Beach Poly wide receiver Kareem Kelly and San Diego Morse linebacker Christian Prosser.
