Tantee, Braverman Reach Junior Tennis Semifinals

Amberly Tantee of Dana Point and Natalie Braverman of Newport Beach won their quarterfinal matches Friday in the girls’ 16s division at the Southern California Junior Tennis Championships at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Tantee defeated Anneclaire Ortiz-Ruiz of Rancho Cucamonga, 6-2, 6-1, and Braverman defeated Brooke Borisoff of Agoura Hills, 6-4, 6-2.

In the boys’ 16s, Joseph Kao of Fullerton defeated Santa Monica’s Alexander Anselmo, 6-4, 6-3. Matthew Loucks of Irvine lost to fourth-seeded Ryan Heinberg of Agoura, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the girls’ 14s, Anne Yelsey of Corona del Mar will play Lindsey Nelson of Orange in today’s semifinals. Yelsey advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Reza Zalameda of Los Angeles, and Nelson got past Irvine’s Aimee Kim, 6-1, 6-0.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

* Mission Viejo’s Stephanie Cox and partner Katy Eldridge scored a pair of upsets during qualification for the Oldsmobile Alero Beach Volleyball tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.

Cox and Eldridge, who are seeded ninth, advanced to today’s $100,000 main draw with a 15-6 victory over Carrie Busch and Leanne Schuster, who were top-seeded in the qualifier. Cox and Eldridge won their opening match, 15-6, over eighth-seeded Jennifer Holdren and Laguna Beach’s Rachel Wacholder.

Also advancing to the main draw were Angela Rock (El Toro High) and partner Patty Dodd.

Ali Wood (UC Irvine) and partner Danalee Bragado of Honolulu, Linda Hanley (Laguna Beach High) and Nancy Reno of Glen Ellyn, Ill, and Elaine Youngs (El Toro High) and Liz Masakayan of San Diego received automatic qualifying bids.

BASEBALL

* Calvary Chapel’s Joe Walters was named baseball coach of the year by Cal-Hi Sports.

Several Orange County players joined him on the team.

Pitchers Brian Wolfe (Servite) and Brett Young (Calvary Chapel), infielder Pat Manning (Mater Dei) and outfielder Dan Franklin (El Dorado) were named to the overall team.

The medium schools category included pitcher Steve Lee (La Quinta), infielder Ty Harper (Corona del Mar) and multi-purpose player Ruben Mancilla (Costa Mesa). John Emme of Corona del Mar was selected the top coach in the category.

Infielders Randy Blood (Calvary Chapel) and Chad Sterbens (Calvary Chapel) were picked to the small schools division team, where Walters also was honored as the top coach.

FOOTBALL

* Tim Fleming, a wide receiver/defensive back from Orange Lutheran, has been added to the roster for the North at the 40th annual Orange County All-Star game. Fleming replaces offensive lineman Matt Mahoney of Villa Park, who withdrew because of an illness.

The game is July 9 at Orange Coast College.

SOCCER

* The Zodiac will host the Galaxy of Major League Soccer in an exhibition game July 14 at Santa Ana Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Reserved seats are $10 and $7.50 and general admission will be $5.

GYMNASTICS

* The Anaheim Convention Center will host the Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships beginning July 4.

The event, which concludes July 11, features five levels of competition: Elite, Junior Elite, Masters, Junior Olympic and Developmental.

Lake Forest’s Jenny Parilla, 18, is the current women’s national champion in all three trampoline disciplines: individual, synchronized (with partner Nicole Basanda, 19, of Aliso Viejo) and double mini. Parilla will be among more than 1,500 athletes expected to participate.

Trampolining will debut as an Olympic medal event at Sydney in 2000.
