Edison Field Looks Like a Doctor’s Office

Share

The busiest man at Edison Field on Saturday was Dr. Lewis Yocum, who examined four Angel players--pitcher Ken Hill, outfielders Tim Salmon, Jim Edmonds and Matt Luke--before the game.

The Angels released little information on the results. Yocum is forbidden to comment by club officials.

Hill, who had elbow surgery last season, left his last start because of a sore elbow. He will throw on the sidelines today and then will be reevaluated and possibly pitch Tuesday. Chuck Finley will pitch Monday in Hill’s spot on three days’ rest.

Luke left Friday’s game because of tightness in his right side after making a throw in the first inning. He had an MRI Saturday, which revealed a partial tear in his right rib cage. He will undergo therapy.

Salmon (left wrist) and Edmonds (right shoulder) will continue therapy, with no timetable for their return.

Edmonds worked out with outfield coach Sam Suplizio on Saturday, doing drills for about 30 minutes.

“His instincts looked good for a guy who hasn’t played in the outfield for a long time,” Suplizio said.

Edmonds, who is rehabilitating from shoulder surgery, will continue to work out with Suplizio through the home stand.

“I’m just trying to keep my legs in shape,” Edmonds said. “This was the first day of spring training.”

Jeff Huson hasn’t wasted any opportunities this week, sparking two late-inning rallies in the last four games by getting hits off the bench. He singled to start a three-run rally Tuesday in Seattle. He singled to start a two-run rally Friday against Oakland, then drove in the winning run with an infield hit in the ninth.

“I’ve been getting at-bats all season, that’s a big key,” Huson said. “I haven’t been sitting around on the bench for two weeks. That has happened the last couple of years. I wouldn’t get an at-bat for a week, then they would send me up and expect me to produce.”

Huson was hitting .262 in 84 at bats entering Saturday’s game. He saw more time because Gary DiSarcina was out because of a broken arm.

DiSarcina returned Tuesday, but is still building his stamina. Manager Terry Collins has used Huson in late innings.

Said the 35-year-old Huson: “I actually enjoy that role. I’m at an age where I can’t start every day.”

TONIGHT

ANGELS’ STEVE SPARKS (2-5, 5.02 ERA)

vs.

ATHLETICS’ KENNY ROGERS (4-2, 3.80 ERA)

Edison Field, 5 p.m.

Radio--KLAC (570), XPRS (1090)

* Update--Rogers is traditionally tough on the Angels, with an 11-5 career record, which includes a perfect game with Texas in 1994. He was 2-0 with a 2.01 earned-run average against them last season and had a no-decision in a 6-5 Athletic victory on April 14. Angel leadoff batter Darin Erstad walked five times in two games before Saturday after walking only 22 times in the previous 70 games. “I think Darin could be a bona fide leadoff hitter if he wanted to be,” General Manager Bill Bavasi said. “I’m just not sure he wants to be one.” Erstad walked 43 times last season.
