Titans Win Sixth in Row in Baseball

Shawn Norris and Jeff Gates each had three hits and Jon Smith pitched a complete game as Cal State Fullerton beat New Mexico State, 11-2, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday night at Titan Field.

Smith (4-0) gave up six hits for the Titans (16-5, 2-0). He also struck out 10.

It was Cal State Fullerton’s sixth straight victory. New Mexico State dropped to 9-13, 0-2.

In baseball at the California Classic:

Wisconsin La Crosse 6, Chapman 4--Chapman’s Scott Montgomery hit a three-run homer in the sixth to tie the score, 4-4, but Wisconsin La Crosse rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning to hand the Panthers (13-1) their first loss. In an earlier game, Eric Albright had four RBIs and Pat Stevens had three as Chapman defeated Redlands, 10-3.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 0-7, Sacramento State 1-5--Kelly Lovato struck out seven in a five-hitter for Sacramento State (6-8, 1-1) in the first game. In the second game, Stephenie Little had a two-run single and Jana Oetgen hit a one-run double in the Titans’ five-run fourth inning. Fullerton is 13-8, 1-1.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 2-6; Point Loma Nazarene 1-1--Gina Liebengood gave up four hits in the second game for SCC (16-4-1). Val Vanaken singled in the winning run in the eighth inning. Vanaken, Michelle Murie and Christina Blankenship had RBI singles in the Vanguards’ four-run first inning.

In the Sun West softball tournament:

Chapman wins three games--Behind the no-hit pitching of sophomore Linsey Buendia, Chapman (10-1) beat the University of Sioux Falls, 3-0, in the first of three wins. Buendia struck out seven and walked two. Amie Barnes and Jenni Bankus led the offense for the Panthers, contributing RBI singles. Stephanie Carew went three for four. In earlier games, Chapman defeated Norwich (Vt.), 9-1, and Kean (N.J.), 2-0.

At the Ben Brown Invitational Track and Field Meet

CS Fullerton high jumper takes first--Titan high jumper Brandon Campbell took first place with a mark of 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches. Fullerton’s women’s 4 x 100 meter relay team finished first in 48.9.
