In the Loara baseball tournament:

Fountain Valley 3, Dana Hills 2--Bryan Daguio’s one-out single drove in Josh Bartusick for the winning run in the fourth inning of the championship game. Dana Hills scored two runs in the top of the third, but the Barons (5-0) rallied with a two-run double by Casey Janssen. Junior starter Matt Clanton struck out six and gave up three hits in six innings.

In the Newport Elks Tournament:

Esperanza 15, Mater Dei 7--Kent Carpenter hit a grand slam in the sixth with two outs to give Esperanza a 14-6 lead. Scott Hendrickson went three for four with four RBIs for the Aztecs (4-0) in the championship game.

In the Brea Olinda softball tournament:

Diamond Bar 1, Brea Olinda 0--Porsha Finley homered in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead Diamond Bar to the championship. Erin Hessman (2-1) pitched well for Brea (3-2-1), but fell to 2-1 with the loss.

In the Cypress softball tournament:

Cerritos Gahr 2, Dana Hills 0--Dana Hills’ Loren Thornburg struck out 13 in a complete game, but Gahr (4-0) scored two runs in the fifth inning to win the championship. The Dolphins are 4-1.

In the Costa Mesa softball tournament:

La Quinta 8, Los Amigos 2--Heidi Foster (4-1) struck out five in a three-hitter and went three for three, including a three-run triple as La Quinta (5-1) scored seven runs in the second inning.

At the Brea Rotary Relays:

Brea girls set school record--Brea Olinda’s Maria McReynols, Nicole Shaw, and Kendra Canape combined to set a school record in the long jump with a distance of 46 feet 6 inches, breaking the mark of 44 feet 7 1/2 inches set in 1996.

In the La Verne track invitational:

Villa Park wins--The Spartan boys took first place behind the strong showing of the 1,600 relay team. Augie Escobar had a final leg time of 4:25.5 to lead Villa Park to 1,600 relay win. Kevin Williams (4:38.2), Russel Streadbeck (4:50.0) and Ramon Rosas (4:52.1) were the other runners on the relay team. Villa Park captured the team title.

In the Irvine Track and Field Invitational:

Newport Harbor runner wins--Newport Harbor’s Curt Herberts won the 1,600 in 4:25.49 and the 3,200 in 9:31.43. Sam Lightbody finished first in the shot put (58-3) and second in the discus (171-0) for Huntington Beach. In the girls’ competition, Esperanza was led by Kristin Thompson, who won the shot put (41-2 3/4) and discus (127-2). Woodbridge won the 400 relay (50.74) and 1,600 relay (4:03.73).

In the San Diego boys’ volleyball Invitational:

Newport Harbor wins--Ty Tramblie was named the tournament MVP as Newport Harbor defeated Esperanza, 15-5, 15-10 in the championship match.
