Mater Dei, Servite/Rosary Lead After Winter Season

Share

The winter sports season has concluded and the points have been totaled toward the sixth annual Times Orange County All-Sports Award, presented at the end of the school year to the large- and small-school winners.

Mater Dei retains the lead it took in the fall and Servite/Rosary, which has won the past two small-school titles, has again moved to the top of its division, jumping over Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar, which led after the fall season.

The All-Sports Award rewards schools that have the county’s most successful overall athletic programs. The Times’ scoring format awards points only for a team’s Southern Section playoff participation and finish.

Under the format, 20 points are earned for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs.

Mater Dei, which won section titles in football and girls’ tennis in the fall, added a boys’ basketball championship this past winter. In addition, the Monarchs’ girls’ basketball team reached the section semifinals and its girls’ soccer teams the quarterfinals for a total of 112 points.

Woodbridge, with 100 points, continues in second place in the large-school division thanks to section championships won by its boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.

Rosary won section titles in girls’ basketball and girls’ water polo and reached the quarterfinals in girls’ soccer. Combined with the Royals’ success is that of Servite, which advanced to the semifinals in boys’ soccer and the quarterfinals in boys’ basketball. The schools combined for 140 points.

Santa Margarita, the three-time defending large-school champion, is competing in the small-school division this year because its enrollment dropped to 1,294 (excluding freshmen), as reported to the Southern Section office on Sept. 23. The Eagles, with section championships in boys’ and girls’ soccer, are second with 120 points. Brea Olinda, with another girls’ basketball title, is third at 96.
