Oborn Hits Grand Slam for Titans

Cal State Fullerton won its ninth consecutive game, routing Sacramento State, 21-2, in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday at Sacramento.

Spencer Oborn, Ryan Owens and Aaron Rifkin each had four hits to lead the 14th-ranked Titans (19-5, 4-0).

Oborn extended his hitting streak to 23 games, with three doubles and a grand slam. He had six runs batted in.

Owens homered twice and drove in five runs. He leads the Titans with five home runs this season. Robert Guzman, Rifkin and Chris Stringfellow each hit their first home runs of the season for the Titans.

Matt Sorensen improved to 5-0, striking out 10 and pitching a seven-hitter without a walk.

In nonconference baseball:

Southern California College 8, Husson College 0--Brian Schneider pitched seven innings of shutout ball to get the victory for host SCC (10-14). James Dent and Jason Murrietta drove in two runs each, and Eric Booth got two hits and scored two runs.

In the Kia Klassic Softball Tournament:

Arizona State 5, Cal State Fullerton 1--Missy Hixon and Christine Gill were three for four to lead Arizona State (25-5). Kirsten Voak (14-3) pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Stephenie Little hit her eighth home run of the season for the Titans’ (15-10) lone run.

In the Big Island Softball Festival:

Southern California College 11, Park College 0 (6, mercy)--Val Vanaken had three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead SCC (17-8). The Vanguards scored 11 runs on 12 hits, taking a 5-0 lead after two innings.

Alysia Atchley pitched five innings, allowing two hits for SCC.

In the NCAA Fencing Championships:

CS Fullerton is 19th--Jesse Carlson placed 22nd in men’s epee for the Titans, who are 19th after two days of competition at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Penn State leads St. John’s by three points.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Princeton 7, Cal State Fullerton 2--No. 1 singles player Eleanor Luzano won, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 for Cal State Fullerton (7-7).

In the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Penn State:

Cal State Fullerton eliminated--The Titans were eliminated after three of their wrestlers failed to advance at State College, Pa.

Jason Webster (171) lost his third match to Mark Bybee of Northwestern, 6-4. Babak Nejadmaghaddam (197) lost to Chael Sonne of Oregon, 7-5, to fall out. Former Calvary Chapel standout Joey Coughran (141) was eliminated Thursday.

Minnesota sent wrestlers into the finals in the top three weight classes to take a slim lead over Iowa in its bid to win its first team championship.
