Manning’s Homer Leads Mater Dei

Pat Manning hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to put Mater Dei ahead as the Monarchs defeated visiting San Clemente, 4-3, in South Coast League baseball Friday.

Scott Bolcoa led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run for Mater Dei (4-1, 1-0).

Nick Lovato was the winning pitcher for host Mater Dei. San Clemente fell to 2-5, 0-1.

In other South Coast League games:

Capistrano Valley 6, Mission Viejo 5--Scott Cheo hit his fourth home run of the season for Capistrano Valley (3-2, 1-0). Kellan McConnell (1-0) was the winning pitcher, striking out four and giving up no walks. Matt Kustera also hit his fourth home run for host Mission Viejo (5-3, 0-1).

Trabuco Hills 9, Dana Hills 0--Jason Mooneyham hit a grand slam in the seventh for Trabuco Hills (5-1, 1-0). The Mustangs’ Todd Gelatka (3-1) was the winning pitcher with 13 strikeouts. Teammates Ryan Brizendine and Joe Burguett both went three for four. Host Dana Hills drops to 4-2, 0-1.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 9, Century 1--John Paul Frid had a three-run triple in the second inning for the Golden Hawks (5-1, 1-0).

Katella 10, Loara 9--Catcher Chris Walters had the game-winning RBI and went three for four for host Katella (5-3, 1-0). Carlos Pasillas had two RBIs, doubled, and hit his second home run of the season for the Knights. Jacob Kungle doubled and tripled for Loara (2-5, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 3, Sunny Hills 1--Dan Matsen (3-0) pitched a no-hitter for visiting Fullerton (3-4), but didn’t get the shutout. Matsen walked seven, but it was two errors in the seventh that cost him the shutout.

La Habra 4, Troy 3--Kyle Ballard (3-0) kept host Troy (4-4, 0-1) to four hits and struck out four for La Habra (4-4, 0-1). Rob Godinez had two hits for the Highlanders.

Sonora 6, Buena Park 0--Brett Smith pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and was two for three with a double for host Sonora (4-3, 0-1).

Teammate Jacob Mendrin had two doubles and two RBIs.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 4, Tustin 2--Chris Savage went two for two and scored the winning run for host Ocean View (4-2, 1-0).

Servite 13, Saddleback 0 (5, Mercy)--Justin Dunleavy had two hits, including a home run and four RBIs to lead visiting Servite (5-1, 1-0).

Westminster 6, Santa Ana 2--Rick Guerrero hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for the host Lions (5-3, 1-0).

Fred Rodriguez pitched seven innings and struck out seven for Westminster.

In the Orange League

Brea Olinda 8, Valencia 4--Mike Davern pitched a complete game and had 12 strikeouts for the host Wildcats (4-2, 1-0).

Nick Stagnaro finished with a double and two RBIs, and Ron Benigno had a double and an RBI and scored three runs.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 16, Laguna Beach 4 (5, mercy)--Senior pitcher Robert Deven struck out a career-high nine and walked two in five innings for host Aliso Niguel. Sophomore Kyle Mowery was three for three, hit two home runs in the third inning and had three RBIs for Aliso Niguel (4-3, 1-0). Senior Courtney Hemerick had a home run, a double and six RBIs for the Wolverines.

University 16, Laguna Hills 11--University had six home runs as Andy Dennis (two), Joe Claytor, Cody Whitson, Kevin Conlin and Jay Nichols hit one each. University is 2-4, 1-0.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 7, Marina 6--Glenn Hedgpeth hit a two-run double in the fifth to tie the score for host Edison (6-2, 1-0). Dale Thayer (1-2) struck out nine and go the victory for Edison.

Los Alamitos 5, Esperanza 4 (8)--Ron Prettyman hit a two-out single, knocking in the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Esperanza (7-2, 0-1) took a one-run lead in the top of the eighth. Winning pitcher Dave Smith (2-0) had two hits and a run scored.

Huntington Beach 6, Fountain Valley 5--Jeff Ruziecki hit a bases-loaded double in the seventh, scoring the tying and winning run for host Huntington Beach (4-2, 1-0). Fountain Valley is 5-1, 0-1.

In nonleague games:

Artesia 10, Santiago 9--Brian Pilkington hit a two-run home run in the third, and had a total of three RBIs for visiting Santiago (2-3).

Bloomington Christian 21, Liberty Christian 1--Ike Morris was three for three with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored, and Matt Abel was three for four with three runs scored for the Ravens (5-1).

Calvary Chapel 23, Woodcrest Christian 2 (5, mercy)--Matt Mossberg went five for six with a home run and two RBIs, and Pastor Perez was two for four with a homer and five RBIs for visiting Calvary Chapel (7-1). Brett Young (3-0) struck out six in three innings for the Eagles.

Garden Grove 5, Cerritos 1--Eric Davis (3-1) struck out seven and was the winning pitcher for host Garden Grove (4-2). Davis also doubled and hit his second home run of the season.
