Jerro Chosen Coach of the Year

Frozena Jerro, who began the season as interim coach and led Cal State Northridge to its first NCAA tournament berth, has been selected Big Sky Conference coach of the year in women’s basketball.

Jerro, who was promoted to coach March 7, replaced Michael Abraham a week before the season began after Abraham was arrested on federal drug charges.

Northridge, in its third season in the Big Sky, was 21-8, finishing first in the conference and winning the conference postseason tournament. The 15th-seeded Matadors were defeated by Colorado State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Sophomore Edniesha Curry and freshman Lynda Amari were selected to the all-conference team. Sophomore Tina Greer received honorable mention.

* Elizabeth Hansell of The Master’s women’s basketball team and Joey Penberthy of the men’s team have been selected to NAIA Division I All-American third teams.

Hansell, a senior forward, averaged 19.9 points and 9.4 rebounds, helping the Mustang women to a best-ever 28-6 record and their first appearance in the NAIA Division I national tournament.

Penberthy, a junior guard, had an 18.5 scoring average. Teammate Joclin Julmist, a junior forward, received All-American honorable mention.

BASEBALL

* Bobby Hughes, formerly of Notre Dame High, is leading the Milwaukee Brewers in batting during spring training.

Hughes, a catcher, was batting .462 (18 for 39) with a team-high nine runs batted in through Monday.

SOCCER

* The Seven-A-Side open tournament for players of all skill levels is scheduled for April 10-11, with an over-30 event slated for April 17-18.

Both tournaments will be played at College of the Canyons.

Cost is $150 per team, with proceeds benefiting the Canyons women’s soccer program.

GOLF

* The 27th annual Taylor’s Steak House Open tournament is scheduled for April 5 at La Canada Flintridge Country Club.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Devereux School, a Santa Barbara facility serving children and adults with autism.

The third annual Spring Classic men’s slo-pitch tournament, benefiting the Gold Coast 49ers youth football organization, will be played April 3 (C Division) and April 10 (D/novice) in Oxnard.
