Mission Viejo Beats Cougars in Swimming

Mission Viejo, ranked sixth in girls’ swimming, won all three relays and all but one individual event to defeat No. 8 Capistrano Valley, 105.5-64.5 in a South Coast League meet Tuesday.

Mission Viejo’s Alison Vass, who led off the 200 medley relay, won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute 1.78 seconds and the 100 backstroke (1:02.82). Teammate Lindsey Hartman swept the 50 (26.01) and 100 freestyles (55.60) and Jessica Klenner was Mission Viejo’s third double winner with victories in the 200 free (1:58.68) and 500 free (5:15.06).

Vass, Hartman and Klenner had Southern Section qualifying times.

Nikki Stevens was the only winner for Capistrano Valley with a victory in the the 200 individual medley (2:16.0).

In Sea View League girls’ swimming:

Santa Margarita 117, El Toro 53--Shannon Packard finished the 200 individual medley in 2:15.38 and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.38, both Southern Section qualifying times.

In South Coast League boys’ swimming:

No. 2 Mission Viejo 111, No. 4 Capistrano Valley 59--Mission Viejo’s 200 medley relay team of Matt Kelleher, Attila Szilagyi, Bo Luddy and Matt Feeney turned in one of the fastest times this season for the event (1:41.49). Diablo Scott Davison swam a Southern Section qualifying time in the 500 freestyle to win the event in 4:52.88.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 103, Santa Margarita 67--Although El Toro won only two events, their second- and third-place swimmers secured the victory. Santa Margarita’s Edmund Herlihy finished the 500 freestyle in 4:50.08, the fastest time in the county this season. Herlihy also won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.60 and helped the Eagles take first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:31.96.

In Empire League badminton:

Loara 12, Magnolia 7--Loara’s Sothea Kiet won in singles, 15-10, 15-12, and, 15-0, 15-1. Kiet teamed up with Thuy Diep for a 17-15, 15-10, mixed doubles victory. Loara improved to 3-4.

In Century League baseball:

No. 8 Canyon 11, Santa Ana Valley 5--David Nelson (five RBIs) went two for three with a grand slam and a double and Aaron Dalzell went three for four with a triple for host Canyon (6-3, 2-0). The Comanches scored eight runs in the first inning.

Villa Park 14, Foothill 10 (8)--Brandon Averill drove in the tying run in the seventh and the go-ahead run in the eighth. Graham Ferguson scored on Averill’s double in the eighth. Bryan Arguello had a three-run homer in the sixth that brought Villa Park within one run. Bryan Meyer went three for five and scored three runs for the Spartans (3-5, 2-0). Foothill is 3-3, 1-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 7, Laguna Beach 6--Laguna Hills’ Mike Filipaik singled in Lucas Novak in the fifth inning for the winning run. Jeff Fisher went one for two for the Hawks with a homer in the third and picked up two RBIs.

In Sea View League golf:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 185, No. 10 El Toro 198--Taylor Wood shot a one-under 35 to lead Santa Margarita (4-0, 1-0) at Coto de Caza North.

No. 7 Irvine 198, Woodbridge 198 (Irvine wins on sixth man)--Mike Lavery shot par 36 to lead Irvine (5-1, 1-0) at Oak Creek. Sixth man Dan Oh shot a 43, two strokes better than Woodbridge’s sixth player.

Newport Harbor 206, Corona del Mar 211--After receiving an emergency appendectomy 12 days ago, Newport Harbor’s Kevin Olson was back on the golf course and tied teammate Daniel Kush for medalist with a three-over 39 at Big Canyon.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 210, Capistrano Valley 217--Brett Armstrong and Vince Poncino each shot a three-over 39 to lead the Diablos at Mission Viejo Country Club.

In nonleague golf:

No. 6 San Clemente 191, Bonita Vista 202--Senior Mark Worman shot par 36 at Pacific for San Clemente (7-0).

No. 9 Marina 393, Ocean View 409--Scott Osterhot, who medaled with a one-over 72, made five birdies in two days at Meadowlark and Mile Square for Marina (5-0).

In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:

La Quinta 17, Santiago 1--Robert Chu, Vu Ho and Huy Nguyen swept in singles for host La Quinta (6-1, 3-0).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 14, Tustin 4--Ocean View’s No. 1 doubles team juniors David and Quan Nguyen swept all three of their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Sam Nguyen won his sets 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 for Ocean View (6-1, 1-0).
