Irvine Valley’s King Signs With Lumberjacks

Commander King, a sophomore guard on the Irvine Valley men’s basketball team, has signed to attend Northern Arizona, Laser Coach Jerry Hernandez said.

King, who played point and off-guard, averaged 10 points and 4.5 rebounds last season as Irvine Valley finished 23-10. He is from Mission Viejo High.

King is the second Irvine Valley basketball player to attend Northern Arizona.

Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham, the most valuable player of the Orange Empire Conference for women’s basketball, signed with the Lumberjacks last month.

Cory Sullivan, a sophomore outfielder at Cypress College, has signed to attend Wake Forest next season, Charger Coach Scott Pickler said.

Sullivan, from North Allegheny (Pa.) High, was hitting .460 with 21 doubles, 48 runs scored and 29 runs batted in through 37 games for the Chargers.

Brandi Freudenberg, who played tennis at El Modena High, was honored as UCLA’s outstanding women’s tennis player of the year Saturday at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

Freudenberg, a senior, plans on turning professional after graduation. She was a two-time Times Orange County player of the year in high school.

Brothers Rodrigo and Victor Garcia of Santa Ana won championships recently at the 1999 District Junior Olympic boxing tournament at the Salgado Community Center in Santa Ana.

Rodrigo, 10, won at his third consecutive Junior Olympic championship and for the second consecutive year was voted outstanding boxer of the tournament. Victor, 9, won his first championship. Members of the T.K.O. Youth Boxing Club, the brothers attend Rosita Elementary School.

Approximately 210 boys and girls between ages 8 and 16 from throughout Southern California competed in the tournament.

Loriessa Randle said she has resigned as girls’ basketball coach at Fullerton High School.

Randle was the Indian coach for one season; they finished 8-16. She said she is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

Aprile Powell of Century has signed to attend Cal Poly Pomona to play women’s basketball, said her coach, Jeff Watts.

Powell, a 6-2 center, averaged 21.1 points and 15.3 rebounds last season--the county’s third-highest totals in both categories.

Troy guard Kristin Arnold has committed to play basketball at Biola, her coach, Kevin Kiernan, said.

Arnold was the county’s second-leading three-point shooter (46.3%) and averaged 6.1 assists as Troy won its first 27 games.

Esperanza’s Allison Gerber said she has signed to play women’s basketball next season at Loyola Marymount. Gerber averaged 12.9 points.

Rosary first baseman Erin Hogan signed to play softball at Loyola Marymount, Rosary Coach Tom Tice said. Hogan, a first-team All-Southern Section Division IV selection last season, is hitting .377 with four home runs and 21 runs batted in this season.

Capistrano Valley’s Nichole Palo has committed to play soccer at Long Beach State next season, according to her former club coach, Tino Ray Younger.

Palo, a midfielder, was a two-year varsity player for the Cougars.

Distance runner Kristen Green of Huntington Beach has signed with UC Santa Barbara. Green expects to compete in cross-country and also run the 800 and 1,600 meters for the Gaucho track team.

Mission Viejo’s Carla Legaspi has signed to play golf at Long Beach State, according to Mission Viejo officials.

Chrystal Hewitt of Canyon High has been selected to play soccer in the U.S. Scholar-Athlete Games, June 26-July 2 in Rhode Island.
