Starting May 15, police will write $21 to $34 tickets on vehicles parked without permits in Old Town West, generally bounded by Sausalito, Florista, Chestnut and Oak streets.
The City Council agreed to the permit parking last month after residents complained they had to compete with members of the Cottonwood Christian Center on Sausalito Street for scarce parking spaces.
Church leaders said they are looking for a new building because the congregation has outgrown its present location.
The city ordered 2,000 permits, figuring that is the maximum needed for the 364 apartment units and homes in the neighborhood.
So far, residents have picked up about 300 of the free permits at the Police Department, 3201 Katella Ave. Police have also been handing out two guest permits per home. Information: (562) 431-2255, Ext. 402.
