Clippers Won’t Play at Pond
The Clippers will abandon their annual series at the Arrowhead Pond and play their entire home schedule at the Staples Center upon moving into the new arena next season.
The NBA Board of Governors must approve the move, although NBA spokesman Evan Silverman said approval is considered a formality. An announcement is expected following today’s board meeting in New York.
The Clippers played 37 regular-season games in Anaheim from 1994-99, with an average crowd of 14,788. On March 12, 1998, the Clippers and Lakers drew 18,521, the largest crowd ever to watch an NBA game in Southern California.
In six games at the Pond this year, the Clippers attracted an average crowd of 12,945. The Clippers averaged 9,404 at the Sports Arena this season, and their overall average of 10,263 ranked lowest in the NBA.
The Clippers do not plan to play any exhibition games at the Pond next season. The Lakers are expected to announce an exhibition game next season in Anaheim against the Utah Jazz.
