Victory Puts Cypress in 11th Straight State Tournament

Cypress, the two-time defending state softball champion, earned its 11th consecutive trip to the state tournament with a 10-3 victory over Cuesta in a Southern California playoff game Saturday at Cypress College.

Koral King, who had three runs batted in and two runs scored, hit a two-run double to highlight a four-run first for the Chargers (54-7), who led 10-0 after three innings.

Winning pitcher Mandy Rockwell struck out five in four shutout innings to improve to 30-1 for Cypress.

At other regional sites:

Saddleback 2, Moorpark 1--Tara Kroener (29-11) pitched a three-hitter and scored the winning run on Nicole Brunk’s sixth-inning double for Saddleback (35-13-1), which advanced to the state tournament with the victory at Moorpark.

Betsy Holman doubled and scored on a two-out single by Tracy Habiger in the fifth also for Saddleback.

Palomar 2, Fullerton 0--Palomar (39-12) scored two unearned runs to remain unbeaten in the bracket. Fullerton (35-12) needs three victories today to advance.

At the state track and field meet in San Francisco:

Gomez third in 5,000--Orange Coast’s Zoila Gomez finished third in the women’s 5,000 meters (18 minutes 16.98 seconds) after winning the 10,000 (38:07.47) Friday. Golden West’s Tofi Togagae was third in the shotput (43- 1/4) and fourth in the discus (135-11).

In the men’s meet, Long Beach’s Dominique Degrammont, formerly of Tustin High, won the 110 high hurdles in 13.85 seconds.

Orange Coast’s Travis Vandrovec finished second in the pole vault (16 feet). Friday, Golden West’s Matt Wentz finished second in the javelin (184-3).

In the women’s meet Friday, Santa Ana’s Etta Jackson won the javelin (124-9).
