Giordano, Mendoza Selected All-Pacific 10

Sophomore Nicole Giordano of Arizona, The Times’ 1997 Valley player of the year, and freshman Jessica Mendoza of Stanford, Ventura County player of the year last season, have been selected to the All-Pacific 10 Conference team.

Mendoza, whose 54 runs batted in and .680 slugging percentage rank third in the conference, was chosen Pac-10 newcomer of the year.

* Cal State Northridge’s Tara Glaister and Jessica Creith were named to the All-Big West Conference team along with former Newbury Park star Kristi Fox of Long Beach State.

* Kellie Labor of San Diego State, a former Crescenta Valley outfielder, was selected to the All-Western Athletic Conference team.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Jose Merino of Glendale College, who won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in the state junior college championships at City College of San Francisco on Saturday, was selected the Western State Conference men’s track and field athlete of the year on Tuesday.

Merino, who has committed to Adams (Colo.) State, won the steeplechase, 5,000 and 10,000 in the WSC championships last month.

BASEBALL

* The Southern Section Division II first-round playoff baseball game between Canyon and San Marcos highs that was scheduled for Friday has been changed to 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Canyon.

The switch was made to accommodate San Marcos’ prom night, which is Friday.

MISCELLANY

* Jason Brown, a junior pitcher at Paraclete High, is among more than 200 Jewish teens and adults from 29 states selected to represent the United States in the ninth Pan American Maccabi Games from July 8-20 in Mexico City.

Also expected to compete are swimmer Sarah Jacobs of Ojai and softball player Laurence Rosenthal of Sherman Oaks.

GYMNASTICS

* Trishna Patel of Northridge won the vault and finished fifth in the overall competition at the Junior Olympic USAG Western Championships in Seattle on May 8-9.

Patel, 16, is unbeaten in the vault this season.

AUTO RACING

* Troy Rutherford of Ojai finished ninth in the Sprint Car Racing Assn. 30-lap main event Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.

SURFING

* The National Scholastic Surfing Assn. will hold its Western Regional championships Friday through Sunday on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

More than 400 top amateurs are expected to compete.
