Police, Firefighters to Wage Football Feud

Los Angeles police and firefighters will each field a football team Sunday in the seventh annual 911 Bowl.

The police team will be playing to benefit the Los Angeles Blind Children’s Center, which serves as many as 60 families a year at no charge.

The firefighters team will play for the Chaplain’s Benevolent Fund, which provides support for the five Fire Department chaplains who give spiritual counseling and other assistance to firefighters and their family members.

Some of the proceeds will go to the United Way of Greater Los Angeles, the largest private funder of health and human services in Los Angeles County, serving more than 2,000 local charities last year.

Sunday’s game will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., Valley Glen. Tickets are $5, which may be purchased in advance at any local police or fire station, or by calling the United Way at (213) 630-2191.

“The LAPD team will have to call 911 when they see what we do to them on the playing field,” the Fire Department’s Ron Harmon said. “It’s a shame the police team has to lose, but at least the children in need will win.”
