Gledhill Shares City Award as Player of Year

Mike Gledhill, opposite hitter for Taft High, was selected City Section co-player of the year in boys’ volleyball with Rob Neilson of Palisades.

Gledhill, a 6-foot-5 junior, helped the Toreadors win the City Championship.

Other All-City selections include Brian Capper and Brandon Brown of Taft, Jose Sanchez and James Taruc of Monroe, David Lurth of Chatsworth, Mike Aleman of Granada Hills and Andrew Choy of Kennedy.

* Middle blocker Cam Dickson of Royal High was selected Marmonte League player of the year.

Dickson, who helped the Highlanders reach the Southern Section Division I semifinals, has signed with Cal State Northridge.

* Setter Ty Tramblie of Newport Harbor has committed to Cal State Northridge.

The 6-foot Tramblie has helped Newport Harbor reach the Division I boys’ championship match Saturday against Corona del Mar.

DIVING

* Cal State Northridge signed Brooke Free of Federal Way High School in Washington.

Free placed third in the state high school diving championships as a junior and fifth this year.

* Christina Flynn of El Camino Real was selected to the National Interscholastic Coaches Assn.’s All-American team.

SOCCER

* Brandon Esparza, a defender-midfielder who helped South Hills High win the Southern Section Division IV championship, has signed with Cal State Northridge, becoming the first recruit for new Coach Terry Davila.

SOFTBALL

* Catherine Davie of Michigan, from Westlake High, was selected second team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn.

SURFING

* Nathaniel Curran of Oxnard finished third in the explorer boys’ division (13-14) at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Western Championships last weekend in Huntington Beach.

WATER POLO

* Jonathan Schild, former Mission League most valuable player at Crespi, has been selected the school’s coach.

Schild was an All-American swimmer at Claremont-McKenna College.

WRESTLING

* Bill Lake has resigned as coach at Granada Hills High.

MISCELLANY

* Cal State Northridge will remain a member of the Big Sky Conference for at least another year, outgoing President Blenda Wilson said.

Wilson, who attended a conference meeting this week in Spokane, Wash., said Northridge was given a one-year extension on its “memorandum of understanding” with the Big Sky.

The extension is contingent upon Northridge following through with plans to build an on-campus stadium, create a men’s tennis team and upgrade existing athletic facilities.
