Valley Secession Group to Hold Summit on School Breakup
The San Fernando Valley group that wants the Valley to secede from the city announced Thursday that it will hold a summit to consider breaking up the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Citing a need to take control of the district, leaders of the secession group Valley VOTE are urging political and civic organizations throughout the city to attend the Nov. 13 forum.
“The school district is in crisis,” said Jeff Brain, president of Valley VOTE. “Clearly, we must move fast.”
During the turmoil between the Los Angeles Board of Education and Supt. Ruben Zacarias, the movement to break up the district has gained momentum.
Earlier this week, Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa (D-Los Angeles), a city mayoral candidate, said he would consider the idea.
A separate Valley group has promoted a district breakup for more than five years, but their effort lost momentum.
Valley VOTE has formed a 10-member committee made up mostly of educators to examine the issues and determine whether the organization should support a breakup.
