Marshall Goes for Big Score Tonight Against Paraclete

Share

Jermaine Marshall’s run for the record book continues tonight.

Kilpatrick’s senior running back needs one touchdown to break the region’s season record of 41, set by Wilbert Smith of Montclair Prep in 1993 and tied by Ted Iacenda of Hart in ’94.

Last week against Village Christian, Marshall became the region’s single-season rushing leader with 2,339 yards, surpassing Smith, who rushed for 2,325 yards in ’93.

Marshall, who leads the state in rushing, still has a ways to go to set state records for regular season rushing and touchdowns. But they are within reach.

Ramod Lee of Moreno Valley Valley View rushed for 2,549 yards in 10 games in 1993, and Onterrio Smith scored 50 touchdowns for Sacramento Grant last season.

The Southern Section record for touchdowns in a regular season is 47, set by Chris Hanks of Cathedral in 1997.

Kilpatrick has scored 52 touchdowns this season and attempted no extra point kicks.

“We figure that if we score five touchdowns and get five two-point conversions, that’s still a five-point lead, even if we give up five touchdowns,” said Coach Sid Ware, whose team is averaging 46 points per game.

The Mustangs (6-2, 3-0 in league play) have converted 26 two-point attempts, exactly half.

But the advantage of that strategy was evident last week in a 40-24 Alpha League victory over Village Christian.

Kilpatrick scored only one touchdown more than Village Christian, but had a 16-point margin, thanks to five two-point conversions. Village Christian failed on all four of its extra point attempts.

Russell White of Crespi is third with 5,998 yards, and Eliel Swinton of Montclair Prep is fourth with 5,904.
