Orange Coast Women Win Southern California Title

Orange County runners finished first in the men’s and women’s races and Orange Coast won the women’s title at the Southern California cross-country championship Friday at Bakersfield College.

Zoila Gomez of OCC finished first in 17 minutes 59 seconds on the three-mile course and teammates Heather Shurtleff and Bernice Carbajal were second and third.

Orange Coast finished with 52 points and second-place San Diego Mesa had 119. El Camino (121) was third and Santa Ana (131) was fourth. Santiago Canyon (260) finished sixth.

Santa Ana’s Jose Herrera won the men’s four-mile race in 18:54, beating teammate Alfonso Leon by 15 seconds.

San Diego Mesa (105) won the men’s title and Glendale (113) was second. Santa Ana (116) was third and Orange Coast (120) was fourth.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Irvine Valley 1--Natalie Snowden had 23 kills, Julie Renfrow had 22 and Marissa Cathron had 66 assists to lead the host Rustlers to their 55th consecutive victory, 13-15, 15-5, 15-5, 18-16. Irvine Valley is 12-3, 7-3.

Cypress 3, Riverside 0--Erica Williams had 12 kills for Cypress (11-4, 8-2), which won, 15-8, 15-9, 15-6.

In the South Coast Conference men’s water polo tournament:

Golden West 25, El Camino 1--Logan Shaw had four goals and Brian Murphy added three in the second-round game. The Rustlers (25-1-1) meet Fullerton for the title today at 3 p.m. at Golden West.
