Sonora Puts Forward Its Best Game

Share

Sonora High’s Josh Gonzalez caught four passes for 125 yards and a touchdown to lead the Raiders to a 36-21 Freeway League victory over Fullerton Friday at La Habra High.

When Sonora wasn’t passing to Gonzalez, the Raiders were running Nathan Fitzgerald, who rushed for 122 yards and one touchdown in 10 carries.

Sonora’s defense was also sharp, intercepting three passes--returning one for a touchdown--and recovering two fumbles.

“We swarmed the ball on defense,” Coach Mark Takkinen said. “Offensively we took care of the ball and made big plays. It was one of our best all-around games this year.”

Sonora rushed for 272 yards. Jerron Cannon supported Fitzgerald by running for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Gonzalez started the scoring by catching a 56-yard pass from Nick Ross with 5:35 left in the second quarter to give Sonora (4-5, 2-2) a 7-0 lead.

David Mayfield made it 14-0 with 2:33 left in the second quarter on a three-yard run, capping a 64-yard drive that was set up when Remi Rodriguez recovered a fumble by Fullerton’s Daniel Fells at the Raider 36.

David Villagomez gave Sonora a 21-0 lead by returning an interception 13 yards for a touchdown.

Fullerton (5-4, 1-3) broke the shutout on a 22-yard run by Armando Lopez with 5:40 left in the third quarter, finishing an 86-yard drive.

Sonora killed any momentum shift, however, when Cannon scored from three yards with 37 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Gonzalez’s two-point conversion run gave the Raiders a 29-6 lead.
