Lights Are Nearly Out for Eagles After Loss

Playoff hopes that were already dim turned bleaker for Calvary Chapel after a 36-0 Olympic League loss to host Cerritos Valley Christian Friday night.

Calvary Chapel (2-7, 1-3 in league) was unable to sustain a drive all night, gaining only 36 yards in total offense, including minus-one yard in the second half.

Valley Christian (7-2, 3-1), after a slow start, gained 424 yards on offense, 179 on the ground.

A failed fake punt by Calvary Chapel midway through the first quarter, set up the Crusaders’ first score, a 12-yard pass from Mark Streelman to Brent Boekestein.

The Crusaders scored again with 12 seconds left in the half, when Streelman connected with Boekestein again, this time on a 59-yard pass play to increase Valley Christian’s lead to 21-0 at halftime.

Calvary Chapel made it into Crusader territory only once all night, when Andy Avila returned an interception 54 yards in the second quarter.

Troubled by a stingy Crusader defense, the Eagles were only able to run 12 plays from scrimmage in the second half to Valley Christian’s 29.

Boekestein finished with eight catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns for Valley Christian. Teammate Streelman passed for 186 yards on 12-of-24 passing with four touchdowns.

Rounding out the Valley Christian offensive attack was Josh Castillo, who rushed for 86 yards in 21 carries.
