Moorpark Stays in Hunt for Title

Moorpark College kept its title hopes alive with a 32-21 victory over Valley in a Western State Conference Northern Division game Saturday night at Moorpark.

Farhaad Azimi threw three touchdown passes, including two during a 26-point second-half for the Raiders, who remained in a tie for first place with Hancock and Ventura.

Moorpark (5-3, 4-1 in division play) outgained the Monarchs, 405 yards to 329, and got a surprise boost late in the game from running back Emmanuel Evans.

Evans, hampered with injuries this season, was not expected to play but entered the game in the fourth quarter and scored on a 29-yard run on his first carry.

Bryant Phipps gained 88 yards in 13 carries. Evans had 81 yards in nine carries and Ray Carmel had 93 yards in eight carries.

Carmel raced for a 56-yard touchdown with 12:07 left in the third quarter after Valley had gone ahead, 14-7.

Azimi completed 14 of 29 passes for 193 yards.

Jerome Riley of Valley had nine catches for 151 yards.

The Monarchs committed three turnovers, including a fumble on their final possession.
