Olson Expects to Transfer to USC

Jordan Olson, a two-time All-Southern Section pitcher from Crescenta Valley High who is attending L.A. City College, plans to enroll at USC in the fall of 2000.

Olson, a left-hander, helped the Falcons win the 1998 section Division I championship.

Olson had problems with the NCAA Clearinghouse, but they have been resolved, said his father, Dan.

Dan Olson attended USC and his father worked 33 years at the school.

AUTO RACING

* Ron Hornaday Jr. led for 98 of the first 100 laps of the Outback Steakhouse 200 on Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway on his way to a sixth-place finish in his NASCAR Busch Series debut.

Hornaday, who won two NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series titles driving for seven-time Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt, allowed teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. to take the lead from the 25th to the 27th lap so Earnhardt Jr. could earn five bonus points in his quest for a second consecutive Busch championship.

Earnhardt Jr., who will move up to the Winston Cup Series in 2000 while Hornaday takes his place in the Busch Series, clinched the title with a second-place finish behind defending Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon.

Hornaday earned the Gatorade Front Runner award.

GOLF

* Jason Semelsberger of UCLA shot two-under-par 70 and is tied for 11th place in the Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational after two rounds at Hilton Head, S.C.

Semelsberger, who played at Hart High, is at 68-70--138.

Russell Surber of Texas, who played at Flintridge Prep, is at 67-74--141, which Brandon DiTullio of UCLA, who played for Westlake High, at 73-70--143.

Michael Beard of Pepperdine is at 74-71--145, with Ross Fulgentis of UCLA, who played for Westlake, at 75-72--147.

Tamie Durdin of Pepperdine is tied for 10th in the women’s standings at 71-76--147.

Linda Ishii of USC, from Westlake, is at 72-73--155.

Jenny Glasgow of Pepperdine is at 80-77--157, with teammate Esther Chai at 79-78--157.

BASKETBALL

* The Cal State Northridge women open the season at 7 tonight in an exhibition game against a touring group of players.

* Crespi is holding a midnight madness practice session from 10:30 p.m. Friday to 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the school.

The Clipper cheerleaders are expected to attend.

FYI

* Tryouts for the Zuma Bay Volleyball Club are scheduled for Sunday and Nov. 14.

The schedule is as follows:

At Cal Lutheran: 12-and-under, noon to 1:30 p.m.; 14-and-under, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

At Thousand Oaks High: 16-and-under, 6 to 9 p.m.; 18-and-under, 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 14.

* Tryouts for the Thunder Girls’ Junior Volleyball Club are scheduled for today at Pierce College.
