Regals Stumble in Soccer Semifinal

Alix Rucinski scored for Cal Lutheran in regulation but the Regals finished tied, 1-1, and lost to UC San Diego in a penalty-kick shootout in an NCAA Division III West Regional women’s soccer semifinal Saturday at UC San Diego.

UC San Diego (15-1-2) advanced to today’s regional final against University of Puget Sound by beating Cal Lutheran, 4-3, in the shootout after the teams failed to score in overtime.

Cal Lutheran (15-6-1) was eliminated when UC San Diego goalkeeper Jennifer Hetland stopped back-to-back penalty kicks by Jennifer Agostino and Holly Martin and scored the go-ahead penalty kick herself.

Laura Dooly converted with an assist from Emma Gorst in the 85th minute for UC San Diego. Rucinski had scored three minutes previous with a header off a corner kick.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Northridge 119, Team Prestige 80--Brian Heinle made 11 of 15 field-goal attempts en route to 26 points for the Matadors in an exhibition victory at Northridge.

Heinle sank three three-point shots and had seven rebounds. Jeff Parris added 13 points and Markus Carr had 15 assists for Northridge. Andre McCullaum came off the bench and scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Team Prestige.

The Master’s 86, Christian Heritage College 84--Kenny Jackson made six of nine three-point shots and had 24 points for the Mustangs in an opener at The Master’s.

The Master’s overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and outscored Christian Heritage, 47-35, in the second half.

Brad Nicholson scored 30 points for the Hawks.

Jacy Armbruster contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs and Joey Penberthy scored 20 points.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge def. Portland State, 15-6, 15-10, 15-4--Laura Szymanski had 20 kills in 28 attempts with five errors for a .536 hitting percentage, and had seven blocks for the Matadors in a Big Sky Conference match at Portland State.

Hedder Ilustre had 13 digs and Alexis Cormier had 11 for the Matadors (8-9, 6-8).

Taryn Winters had 10 kills for Portland State (2-22, 0-14).

MEN’S WATER POLO

USC 12, Pepperdine 2--Michael Hausman and Sean Hylton scored for Pepperdine but the No. 7-ranked Waves (8-11, 2-5) lost a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at third-ranked USC (17-3, 5-1). Peter Janov scored three goals for the Trojans.

WRESTLING

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tournament--Saul Lucatero won the 149-pound class to help Moorpark win the tournament.

Cristobal Gonzalez won the 184-pound class for Moorpark, ranked No. 1 in Southern California by the J.C. Athletic Bureau.
