SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A man who held up a pedestrian for $9 evaded police after a three-hour manhunt in Anaheim on Monday that involved 20 officers, police dogs and a helicopter.

The victim was making a call at a pay phone about 9 a.m. near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Romneya Drive when he was accosted at gunpoint. He handed the robber his wallet, which contained $9 in cash, police said.

The assailant then fled on foot. The police pursuit began when he was spotted by a patrol officer.

“He was armed and dangerous, and we wanted to make every effort to make sure he couldn’t prey on additional victims,” Anaheim Police Sgt. Joe Vargas said, explaining the extensive police response.

Officers conducted a house-to-house search in north Anaheim near La Palma Avenue and Citron Street. Police found the gun that they believe was used in the robbery, but the assailant escaped.

The man was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt and dark pants. He has a tattoo or a scar on his cheek, Vargas said.

If caught, the man will be charged with felony armed robbery, Vargas said.
