Not all the news was bad last week for Crescenta Valley (8-1, 4-0 in Pacific League play), which suspended nine players for disciplinary reasons and had several other players out with injuries.

The Falcons, playing without six defensive starters against Pasadena, posted their second shutout against a league opponent.

Scott Vossmeyer, Crescenta Valley’s senior quarterback, doubled up at linebacker and made 16 tackles.

Senior cornerback David Stout stepped into the lineup and deflected a pass and made four tackles.

Junior linebacker Mike Rosen added four key tackles.

The Falcons will get a little relief tonight against Arcadia, when three of the suspended players will return to the lineup. Five others will return to the team for the playoffs.

One player has been dismissed from the team.

Coach Alan Eberhart isn’t resting easy.

“Until we get the rest of them back, depth is going to be a major problem,” he said.

Coach Lin Parker of Highland and Coach Brent Newcomb of Antelope Valley are fishing buddies and share a trailer in Kernville, near their favorite fishing spot.

On Friday night, their teams will play at Antelope Valley for the Golden League championship, a game the coaches are calling the Fish Camp Bowl.

The game will also decide something else.

“The loser will have to haul out the trash, wash the dishes and do anything else we can think of [on our next fishing trip],” Newcomb said.

Antelope Valley is averaging 263 yards rushing per game, thanks to a triple-option offense manned by quarterback Demetre Booker and running backs Jermaine Norman, Jon Molock, Brandon Stewart and Ron Miller.

Miller, who attended Palmdale as a freshman, had a career night last week against his former school.

He carried 10 times for 122 yards and three touchdowns, and caught a 28-yard touchdown pass in a 38-26 victory.

Yardage will be difficult on Friday night against the league’s top defense, which is led by linebacker Paul Soto.

“Last year, we had three linemen quit the team after having to play against him,” Newcomb said of Soto.
