A Spanish tourist who police say stabbed a 72-year-old Huntington Beach woman and her 34-year-old son last year while he was staying with them has been arrested in his homeland, officials said Thursday.

Gonzalo Alfonso Cabero Feliciano, 28, was taken into custody by Spanish authorities in Valencia late last month, said Huntington Beach Police Lt. Chuck Thomas. A Spanish judge will decide within 45 days whether Feliciano may be extradited to the United States to face attempted murder charges.

Feliciano was a weekend house guest in October 1998 of John and Mary Rogers, Thomas said. Police believe he attacked the two with a knife following an argument.

The mother and her son were stabbed in the throat; both were seriously injured, Thomas said. The Orange County district attorney’s office has charged Feliciano with two counts of attempted murder in the attack.

If the judge approves the extradition, the FBI will escort Feliciano to the nearest U.S. port, where he will be picked up by Huntington Beach police officers. Feliciano is being held on $100,000 bail, Thomas said.
