Keary Colbert of Hueneme has had a less-than-stellar senior season.

He has 16 receptions for 311 yards and four touchdowns entering a Pacific View League finale tonight against Oxnard.

But Coach Larry Miller says Colbert hasn’t let a subpar season affect his attitude.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Colbert was the No. 16-ranked senior wide receiver in the nation by SuperPrep magazine, but his productivity has been hampered by a knee injury suffered in the first game, a collarbone injury that sidelined quarterback Gordie Pinedo for the last two games, and defenses that have consistently covered him with two and sometimes three players.

“It’s been hard on him, but he’s taken it in stride,” Miller said. “He knows he’s a [NCAA Division I-caliber] player and he’s doing what he can to help the team.”

Colbert, who will take a recruiting trip to Arizona State on Nov. 27-28, has rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries in the last four games in an effort by Miller to get him the ball more often.

Pinedo will miss his third consecutive game tonight after badly bruising his collarbone against Rio Mesa, but he could return for Hueneme’s opening game in the Southern Section Division IV playoffs if he receives medical clearance on Monday.

“He’s been throwing the ball in practice,” Miller said. “But he can’t take any hits yet.”

Pinedo, a sophomore, completed 30 of 66 passes for 561 yards and nine touchdowns, with only one interception, in the first seven games.
