Granada Hills Sweeps Into Semifinals

Jasmine Dao swept Tina Akopyan, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles to help Granada Hills High beat L.A. Marshall, 7-0, in a City Championship quarterfinal tennis match Friday at Granada Hills.

Dao is 14-1 this season for the top-seeded Highlanders (14-0). Every other member of the Granada Hills squad is 15-0.

The Highlanders (15-0) will play No. 4 Hamilton Tuesday at Warner Center Tennis Club in Woodland Hills.

Hamilton 5, San Fernando 2--Sonia Rangel defeated Audrey Sands, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Claudia Perez and Valerie Mendoza beat Natalie Hudson and Rickesha Morris for the Tigers in a City Championship quarterfinal loss at Hamilton.

Rangel is 12-3, and Perez and Mendoza finished at 14-1 for San Fernando (14-1). Hamilton is 11-2.

Van Nuys 4, Chatsworth 3--No. 2 singles Tina Chung beat Jackie Avina, 6-1, 6-1, during a City Invitational quarterfinal to clinch the victory for the host Wolves.

No. 1 singles Diana Friedland defeated Natalie Avina, 6-1, 6-0, for Van Nuys (10-4). Friedland went 13-0 during Valley Mission play.

La Canada 10, Ocean View 8--La Canada No. 2 player Jenny Gilmour defeated Ocean View’s No. 3 player, Aileen Pham, 6-3, in the Spartans’ Southern Section Division IV first-round victory at Ocean View.

The match began Thursday but was suspended because of darkness and continued Friday.

Gilmour’s sister, No. 3 singles player Kim Gilmour, was the lone player to sweep three sets for La Canada (13-8), which has won six consecutive matches.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 17, Lompoc 6--Marc Ellison and Derek Anderson each scored three goals in the first quarter as the Highlanders took a 9-1 lead in a Southern Section Division IV first-round playoff game at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Chris Andelin added two of his three goals in Royal’s first period. Tyler Templeton and Ramiro Saldain had two goals apiece.

Goalie Tom Onysko made 10 saves in three quarters for Royal. Chris Bauer played the last quarter and made one save.

Noah Jacobs and Adam Smith each had two goals for Lompoc.

Agoura 13, Rio Mesa 6--Agoura’s Hans Larsen scored three of his four goals in the first quarter during a a Division IV first-round game at Oxnard High.

Matt Monaco scored two of his four goals in the first quarter for Agoura. Paul Stuart scored a goal and had eight steals.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

San Diego Mesa 2, Ventura 1--Valerie Garibay scored on a rebound in the 65th minute and the Olympians (13-5-4) upset the host Pirates (18-4-4) in the first round of the Southern California regionals.

Lacy Hanna scored for Ventura, the No. 4 seed. Kathleen McGuigan had 19 saves for 12th-seeded Mesa.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Canyons def. Santa Monica, 15-4, 15-0, 15-6--Mary Keen had 11 kills and the host Cougars (14-4, 8-0) clinched the Western State Conference Southern Division title.

Jamie Foster added 10 kills and Jenny Sehenuk had four blocks for Canyons.
