Out of ‘Toilet,’ Into a 78-7 Abyss

Before his team played Ocean View for the Golden West League title Thursday night, Tustin Coach Myron Miller had strong words of praise for the Seahawks’ turnaround under Harold Eggers, their second-year coach.

“[Eggers] has done an outstanding job,” Miller said. “That program is scoring lots of points. The kids are believing they can win. That program was in the toilet, they couldn’t win a game. They had three coaches in four years. When you can’t keep a coach over a year, your program’s in trouble.

“He’s playing for a league championship in the last game of the year, I think that’s very impressive. And they’re playing exciting, fun ball, win or lose.”

Thursday was a low point for the Seahawks, losing to Miller’s Tillers, 78-7. Ocean View finished the regular season 7-3, 2-2 in league, and qualified for the Southern Section Division VI playoffs.

Talk about pressure. Calvary Chapel backup quarterback Brent Concolino learned to deal with it in a hurry Thursday night.

A 5-foot-10, 160-pound freshman, Concolino was handed his first starting role in the Eagles’ 56-27 Olympic League loss to fourth-ranked Orange Lutheran. The Eagles’ regular starter, Luke Garner, was dismissed from the school earlier in the week, according to Calvary Chapel Coach Jay Johnson.

Concolino’s response? He completed 15 of 27 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

“This kid is an athlete,” Johnson said of Concolino. “I really felt that he would be able to step in and do the job.”

Before losing to Servite, 31-27 Friday, Santa Margarita had won 23 of 24 home games. The other loss came in 1996--to Servite.
