Eagles Roll Past St. Margaret’s

Capistrano Valley Christian completed its dominance of Academy League opponents with a resounding 62-0 victory over St. Margaret’s Friday night at Laguna Beach High.

The Eagles (8-1, 4-0 in league) outscored four league opponents, 219-24, in winning the title.

Capistrano Valley Christian rushed for 438 yards and scored on nine of 10 possessions Friday. The Eagles were led by Dustin Smith, who rushed 19 times for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Teammate Thomas Grove rushed for 105 yards in five carries, including a 56-yard run midway through the second quarter.

The Eagles held St. Margaret’s (3-5, 1-3) to 96 total yards, including minus-16 in total offense in the second half.

Capistrano Valley scored first, driving 62 yards in four plays. Smith carried it the final 11 yards with 1:15 left in the first quarter. Grove would score his second touchdown on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Jason Ward late in the first half.

Linebacker Richard Newhall recovered a fumble at the St. Margaret’s 21-yard line and two plays later, Smith scored his second touchdown on a nine-yard run to make it 28-0 at halftime.

Even 280-pound offensive lineman David Roth got into the scoring column on a four-yard run with 5:47 left in the game.
