Jason Winn set a Granada Hills career record Friday night for career touchdown passes.

Winn passed for five touchdowns against Birmingham to give him 51, breaking the mark of 49 set by Jeremy Leach in the late 1980s.

Winn has thrown 24 touchdown passes this season to eight receivers. Wide receiver Joey Rodriguez and tight end Tommy Garagliano each have seven scoring receptions.

Running back Robert Ortega of Granada Hills will probably miss the game against San Fernando because of a back injury.

Ortega, who has 401 yards rushing, 404 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns, will be replaced by Tristan Frazier.

Taft must open defense of its City Championship by traveling to San Pedro, never a pleasant experience.

San Pedro (8-2), which finished second to top-seeded Carson in the Marine League, is a rugged team of large backs running behind larger linemen.

‘The [West Valley] League doesn’t play a lot of ram-it-at-you football,” Coach Mike Walsh of San Pedro said. “And Taft has had trouble on defense.”

The implication, of course, is that San Pedro will do the ramming.

Walsh has plenty of respect for the Toreadors, whom his team defeated in three City finals in the 1990s.

“Taft is probably the best offensive team in the city,” he said.

Although San Pedro has not faced a quarterback who throws as well as Brandon Hance of Taft, the Pirates intercepted five passes last week in a victory over Narbonne.
