Don Lugo, Peninsula Are Favored
The Chino Don Lugo boys and Palos Verdes Peninsula girls are regarded as front-runners to win Division I titles at the Southern Section cross-country championships Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
Don Lugo won the Division I race at the Mt. SAC Invitational last month and shows no signs of slowing down. The Conquistadores will try to keep Long Beach Poly from winning a fourth consecutive title.
Garden Grove Santiago is the top-ranked Division II team and Rosemead Don Bosco is favored in Division III. Ojai Nordhoff is seeking its fourth straight Division IV title and Flintridge Prep is the team to beat in Division V.
With Ventura’s Josh Spiker out because of a stress fracture in his leg, Ozzie Pina of Lakewood is a leading contender to win the Division I individual championship. Ryan Hall of Big Bear and Tom Kubler of Calabasas Viewpoint are among those with the best chance of posting the fastest time for the meet.
The Peninsula girls will be challenged by Irvine Woodbridge and Hesperia Sultana in Division I. Santa Ana Foothill is top-ranked in Division II. La Canada and West Covina South Hills are expected to battle in Division III and Corona del Mar and Ojai Nordhoff are the front-runners for the Division IV title. Palos Verdes Chadwick is the top-ranked team in Division V.
