SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A man who led Anaheim police on a slow-speed chase early Thursday quietly surrendered after driving into the police department parking lot, officials said.

Dwayne Johnson, 40, of Orange, was arrested on suspicion of carjacking and other charges at about 9:40 a.m. He allegedly also assaulted his ex-girlfriend and stole her car, said Anaheim police Sgt. Larry Garrison.

The incident began when the unidentified ex-girlfriend arrived at work about 6:30 a.m. Johnson was allegedly waiting for her in a parking lot in the 5200 block of La Palma Avenue, police said.

“He punched her . . . then took her car,” Garrison said.

Johnson drove for almost three hours before calling police from a cellular telephone, Garrison said. He told police he was upset about his breakup and refused to surrender. He told police they’d have to find him to stop him. Police found him driving east on the Riverside Freeway near Harbor Boulevard. Johnson refused to stop but eventually drove to the police department and surrendered, Garrison said.
