Two Treats Rolled Into One

Share

Besides the ocean, the best thing about being centrally located in Huntington Beach is sleeping late on Saturday, rolling out of bed and walking into town for breakfast.

There are so many spots to choose from, but when the weather is as bright and shiny as a freshly waxed board, one of the best strolls is out to the end of the pier.

You’ll need the exercise if you’re having breakfast at Ruby’s.

There you can get a window seat and watch the waves roll in and the mini-ice cream scoop of melting butter hang ten down the sides of your cinnamon roll French toast.

Where else but Ruby’s nostalgic diner would you find an old-fashioned combination with such a wonderfully reckless disregard for cholesterol and calories?

Their giant roll is sliced crosswise in thirds so you can see those dark swirls of cinnamon, then dipped in an egg and milk mixture before grilling. That gives the sugar a chance to caramelize on the griddle.

Pour syrup over the top, dig in and swoon. But don’t feel defeated if your appetite wipes out before you finish; waiters say few diners can eat the whole Kahuna.
