Stagnaro, Brea Strike in First Half, Pound Sonora
Sophomore quarterback Steve Stagnaro threw three touchdown passes and ran for one--all in the first half--to lead Brea Olinda High to a 41-6 victory over Sonora in a first-round Division IX playoff game Friday night at Brea.
The Wildcats (10-0-1) dominated from the start, and used big plays and a tough defense to turn the game into an early blowout. On the first possession of the game, Sonora was forced to punt after three plays. And then the scoring began.
On Brea’s first play from scrimmage, Stagnaro completed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Washington.
After the Raiders (5-6) drove to the Brea Olinda 24-yard line, Nick Stagnaro blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt. Four plays and a penalty later, Ryan Fortner ran 31 yards for a touchdown.
After another quick possession by Sonora, Stagnaro connected with Ron Benigno for a 51-yard touchdown. Two possessions later, Washington added an 87-yard touchdown run.
After a Mike Salazar interception, Stagnaro hit Dan Grajewski for a 25-yard touchdown. And on the next possession, Stagnaro capped a 76-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run. This completed the scoring for the Wildcats, giving them a 41-0 halftime lead.
Stagnaro completed five of eight passes attempts for 171 yards.
