HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
Four teams in the Santa Clarita Valley and only two stadiums. It has been a workable situation for several years, until now.
For the first time, Canyon, Hart, Saugus and Valencia all won first-round playoff games. Three will host quarterfinal games this week.
Canyon, which last won a playoff game in 1991, is the only team among the four that plays home games on campus.
But while Canyon is set to host St. Francis, the Cowboys won’t be playing at home Friday night.
That’s because Valenica, which also plays its home games at Canyon, gets the field against No. 2-seeded Notre Dame because it finished higher than Canyon in Foothill League play.
And Canyon can’t play at College of the Canyons, the other stadium in the district, because that’s where Saugus is hosting Highland.
So where does that leave Canyon? As of Monday night, school officials were unsure.
Three scenarios being considered for the Canyon-St. Francis game include playing Friday afternoon at Canyon, Friday night at a neutral site, or Saturday night at Canyon.
Officials from Canyon and St. Francis hope to reach an agreement today.
