Para-Sailing Mishap Sparks Small Fire

A woman para-sailing in the San Gabriel Mountains on Monday hit electrical wires, touching off a small grass fire, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.

The blaze scorched less than an acre of grass near Tibbets Street and Gavina Avenue around 4:30 p.m., said fire spokesman Bob Collis.

The 35-year-old woman, whose name and residence were not available, did not require medical attention, Collis said. The woman hit wires that touched, dropping sparks into the field. She landed safely.

The area where the incident took place is a popular spot for hang gliding and para-sailing activity, said Collis. “The winds and the terrain are ideal for it,” he said.
