SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
A bill that includes $1 million for preservation of Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Great Stone Church was approved Thursday by the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Ron Packard (R-Oceanside), who sponsored the bill, said more work needs to be done to restore the church.
Restoration work includes retrofitting the structure to withstand earthquakes, stone conservation and repairs necessitated by water damage and erosion, and waterproofing.
The bill now goes to the Senate for approval.
