Santa Ana Beats University After Late Interception

A fourth-quarter interception set up the winning touchdown for Santa Ana in a 15-14 nonleague victory over University on Thursday at Irvine High School.

The Saints (4-2) were trailing, 14-7, when Albert Saldona intercepted Pat Josten’s pass and returned the ball 36 yards to the University five-yard line.

On the next play, Reynaldo Flores scored to cut the lead to 14-13. Erostee Rucker then ran in for the two-point conversion to give Santa Ana a 15-14 lead with 4:19 left in the game.

University (2-4) was unable to move the ball on its next possession and Santa Ana took over on the Trojans’ 17-yard line with 1:15 left and ran out the clock.

Santa Ana was led by Alfred Guidry, who rushed for 137 yards in 13 carries. The Saints attempted only one pass. Flores, the starting quarterback, threw one pass in the second quarter but it was incomplete.

University took a 7-0 lead when Josten connected with Darrin Willard on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 6:17 left in the first quarter.

Guidry ran 82 yards for a touchdown with 5:16 left in the second quarter, tying the score, 7-7.

Josten scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 1:33 left in the second quarter to put University ahead, 14-7.
