Estrada’s Clutch Kick Lifts Los Amigos, 24-21

Victor Estrada’s 31-yard field goal with 33 seconds left lifted Los Amigos to a 24-21 victory over Santiago Friday night in a Garden Grove League game at Garden Grove High.

Los Amigos (2-4, 2-1) took the a 21-14 lead with 5:36 left on a 12-yard run by Aoatoa Sualua.

Sualua finished with 212 yards in 27 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He was about all the offense the Lobos could manage, as quarterback Richard Dinh completed only one of four passes for a minus-eight yards.

Santiago tied the score, 21-21, with the help of a favorable bounce. Sualua deflected quarterback Brian Pilkington’s pass into the hands of Santiago receiver Trung Nguyen, who scored on a 51-yard play with 1:28 left. Nguyen had four receptions for 107 yards.

“We had to make it interesting and close,” Los Amigos Coach Dave Olson said. “I was real proud of our kids and our defensive line picked it up.”

The Lobos forced Santiago quarterback Pilkington into several mistakes. He had two passes intercepted, including one returned four yards for a touchdown by Dinh.

Pilkington completed nine of 21 passes for 145 yards.

Santiago (3-3, 1-2) trailed, 14-0, at halftime, but tied the score in the third quarter on touchdown runs by Bryan Thomas and Brandan Perry. Thomas scored on a one-yard run and Perry on a 12-yard run.
